Sport, sponsorship and the Australian brand calendar

The Australian year is still paced by sport. Brands buy the calendar and then behave as if they bought meaning. A sponsorship is a media plan with a moral risk attached. Treat it as operations — what you will fund when the team loses, and what you will say when the game becomes the news.

The suburb as brand territory

Australian brands keep using inner-city laneways as a stand-in for the country. Most customers live in suburbs that look like themselves, not like Hosier Lane. Territory is not a shoot location. It is the shops, clubs, schools and car parks where the offer has to be true.

Sustainability claims after the ACCC’s greenwashing years

The regulator has spent years teaching Australian brands that environmental language is a representation, not a mood. After the cases and the guidance, the only safe claim is one a sceptical customer, a scientist and a lawyer can all read the same way. That is a design problem as much as a legal one.

Wayfinding as brand, not signage

A customer who cannot find the lift, the platform or the clinic has already met the brand. Australian campuses, stations, hospitals and precincts still treat wayfinding as a late signage package. It is identity at walking speed. Design it with the same seriousness as the mark.

Measuring brand when you cannot afford a tracker

Most mid-market Australian brands do not have a continuous tracker, a brand-equity model or a research manager. They have a finance pack, a few complaints and a board that still asks whether the logo is working. You can still measure. You just have to stop pretending you are Unilever.

Government services branding without the spin

Every machinery-of-government change produces a new logo and a dead URL. Citizens do not need a livelier state. They need the same service to keep its name long enough to be found, and a voice that can give an instruction without sounding like a campaign.

Packaging in a two-supermarket country

In Australia the pack is not a lifestyle object. It is a negotiation with two buyers, a hostile aisle and a printer who will not reprint for a 0.3 millimetre poetry. Distinctive is possible. Naive is expensive. Design the pack for the shelf that exists.

The desk

A journal, not a capability slide

Branding Agency publishes independent essays on how Australian organisations name, design, govern and repair their brands. We write for the people who inherit the files after the launch — marketers, lawyers, operators and the occasional chief who still reads.
